Philipots Island
The ice attracted our boats - pieces large and small in a variety of shapes, colors, and textures. This was glacial ice formed by the gradual accumulation of snowfall on Devon Island and, due to its sheer weight, pushed out to be calved into the sea.
White ice contains tiny air bubbles left over from the snowfall. These reflect and refract all wavelengths of light and we see white. When the pressure has pushed the air out of the ice and pure, crystalline H20 remains, the ice rejects more wavelengths, so to speak, that we perceive as blue.
In a sufficiently large piece, the ice appears to glow with an ethereal blue light. The bigger the piece, the bluer the ice. This was a magnet for our camera lenses.
