Mushamna

Mushamna

Mushamna is a small trapper station on Woodfjord on the northeast coast of Svalbard.
It was inhabited by hunters and trappers who changed every year in the late 19th and 20th centuries.

This later became the property of the Sysselmannen (governor of Svalbard). This tradition continued in Mushamna until recently when the Norwegian Kjell Reidar Hovelsrud built a large, solid hut in the late 1980s.

The hut was rented out to people who wanted to live as trappers in the Arctic for a few years.
However, this trapper station is now closed to the public. The western part of the area, including the Liefdefjord, is now protected as a national park.
